Pavis hurried down Main st, he needed to get back to his terminal, stopping off mingling within the markets had made him late. Oh well, it was worth the wrath he will get from his master, the Luminous Terminal Controller, Hewerbar. The market made him feel real and alive… Not like the flownet, where he spent most of his life…

“Ok, a short cut will do, yes. Access Gelison maps, my location, directions to Luminous, fastest route.” computed Pavis as the link stone embedded in his forehead started to pulse a mute green. He kept a good stride for several more blocks, flow vehicles flew by, burning inches above the street just off the sidewalk to his right, up ahead the operator neared the alley that cut thru the Plug district, which would put him near the Tower of Luminous Manipulation, his terminal was below.
“Maybe I should just be late… Plug district was dangerous with out an escort. Oh well, its not that far into the district. Besides who would attack someone in Luminous marked robes? Yes. Take the route.” Pavis computed and moved toward the alley entrance, the link stone pulsed a vivid green…
He turned the corner, the alley was dark, a smokey mist hung in the close quarters of the back side of businesses, which made it impossible to see more than twenty paces or so. His fear gripped him for a second, but quickly brushed it aside, need to get back and plug in. He walked north, the sounds of traffic from Main st could still be heard buzzing behind him. The link stone in his forehead tingled sharply, warning! Pavis halted immediately, glanced back to Main st, then back. There! He froze, the thin mist faded and revealed a large figure towering and dark, with its back to him, another figure, smaller, crowded the darkness near the large dark one and glared in his direction, eyes wide with surprise. Instantly the large figure glanced back toward Pavis, his hood revealed nothing but a black hole. A silvery glow shimmered and began pulsing with powerful energy from the center of the hooded head. Link stone! Pavis pinged on reflex, his link stone burst green, charged the air within the alley and shot a globe of green energy strait for the hooded figure.
At the same time, the hooded figure returned with his own ping, a silvery pulse fired from out of its dark pit of a face. Both globes of energy collided between the two in seconds, Pavis’s flickered and faded to almost nothing as it passed thru the other, but burned past and struck the dark figure, not fazing him at all. The silvery pulse slammed into Pavis, the energy staggered him backward and nearly buckled his knees, he fought to keep his balance. No…

Notap blended in with the darkness of an alley just within the Plug district, he glanced around nervously and pulled his trench coat tighter to his body, it was a cold night. The alley behind the hiding, quivering man stretched far to the north and disappeared into darkness… the heart of the Plug district. Fifty yards or so to the south, Main st boomed with activity at the entrance to the gloomy alley, Flow vehicles sped by, in both directions, hovering inches from the street. An occasional pedestrian walked by, never glancing his direction. Notap was comforted by being able to see the exit, just in case, fast escape, even the outskirts of the Plug district were dangerous. He had delivered to this spot several times per year and only for this particular customer, he didn’t even know his name, what he did, nothing… Fuck it, the mysterious customers pay the best. Besides, Notap has delivered to this guy for years and never any trouble, never, easy money. Still this man gave him the creeps, he had a certain air to him, very dangerous and intelligent. Come to think about it… never seen his face, always hooded and damn near was the darkness itself, spooky bastard.

Notap squinted into the gloom to the north, searched for any movement, nothing stirred. Where is this son of a …
“I wouldn’t finish that thought Notap.” a deep precise voice said from behind. Notap soul nearly flinched out of his body, his breath lost… “Thats not polite.”

Notap turned to face the voice, a large, tall man dressed in dark clothes, wearing a heavy cloak, which hooded his face, leaving a black pit…

Headed to Plug Ditrict

Embedded in the center of Pavis’ forehead was what looked like a finely cut stone, pulsing a dull green. Whichever surgeon or manipulator had placed the link stone in his skull was a master — no scaring was present. Most link inserts are barbaric, fusing a highly concentrated flow stone into a being’s brain, well… let’s just  say it’s messy.

Pavis didn’t seem bothered by the  stone’s slight vibrations as he continued to walk through the busy market avenues filled with various merchants hawking their products. Several groups of  security guards armed with flow rifles patrolled the area. He stopped occasionally and inspected the wares of  cart vendors, looking for nothing in particular.

It was  nearing noon and Pavis needed to get back to his terminal. The message he sent earlier should have an answer by now. He looked back at the market to see if anyone was looking his way.  Not a soul peered back at him, they seemed all too busy making deals with merchants.

Pavis enjoyed the market, he loved all the interactions and the smells of the food vendors’ offerings. The vibe was appealing…real. Not like the flow net… which even now was calling out to him. The green stone in his forehead began to pulse brighter. Pavis turned and started making his way to the Plugged district.  He hated the terminal and his controller.

Far on the other side of the market, a hooded figure watched as Pavis calmly strode away.
